The Chrysler turbine car suffered from horrible acceleration and dangerous throttle response. Something that plots had to beware of when transitioning from piston engine fighters like the F4U Corsair, which had enough torque to flip itself on it's back if the throttle was rammed home too quickly at low speeds, to cussing a horribly slow accelerating early jet. I watched a turbine car run a 1/4 mile, I can't remember the exact number, but it was more than 20 seconds. Pulling out to pass could be deadly. It had the same horsepower as a slant six, much worse fuel economy, and less acceleration. Also, the hot exhaust was dangerous.

The problem with the miata is when you shave weight in a lot of cases you shave quality, like the rear view mirror casing etc. With the bolts I wouldn't be worried if they just used alloys but it seems they are shaving a bit too much over replacing the types of metal.
